Martin is 40.
There’s really no reason to make him a different age than the actor who plays him. Unless…
That’s a difference of three years.
Which would enable them to give Sherlock a three-year absence, bring him back either at the end of this series or the beginning of the next, and have the ages sync up again.

I swore I wasn’t going to engage with this, but SERIOUSLY? This is something that CONSISTENTLY HAPPENS. Actors RARELY play the age they actually are, and it’s usually skewed younger. Why does ANY role do this? Who knows? It’s just done. We’ve got 30 year olds playing high schoolers for fuck’s sake. I sincerely doubt this is some bizarre twisted plot thing.
