Things that piss me off Vol. 25323577
Kids at my school.
Specifically: the ones who make a big deal about saying “going into the studio!” when they really mean “i’m going to class. it just happens to be in a studio.”
Quit trying to make yourself seem like a big deal that you “have your hustle on” and are “going to the studio to get your game on.”
It’s a fucking lecture class, and if there is actual studio work going on, you ain’t playin’ shit. Most of the ones who say this can’t even play an instrument to begin with. I’m looking at you, hip-hop posers. If you want to make beats, stay in your fucking house, call it a studio, and slap together a bunch of pre-recorded samples that everyone else with the internet and a torrent program has.
If you want to actually make music and call yourself a “Producer,” get your head out of your ass and start acting like an adult. Go to class on time more than one time a quarter, maybe actually GO to class, do your homework, and stop acting like you’re the next timbaland.
I’ve seen too many people with serious potential fizzle out because they were trying to be something they wern’t and couldn’t be bothered with DOING ACTUAL WORK instead of acting like a badass.
I act like a badass, but I actually make my own music, and do the work. So I am a badass.
Except you go to a school where the Admissions staff are trained to tell you exactly the opposite of what you’re saying. When I worked at an AI, the words “make mad beats” actually came out of Admissions staff’s mouths more than once. That’s how they sell it. They sell fame and the money and all the things anyone with an interest in music dreams of and not the fact that in the Audio Production major you have to pass Calculus.
And this, sir, is why you’re going to be just fine, and a lot of these other kids are going to drop/be dropped before they complete their program. Because you recognize the work involved. I saw students who refused to do the work time and time again but kept enrolling in those same classes because as long as they kept paying or taking out loans to pay, AI would never tell them no. It was one of the major factors in why I left that job.
But it does me good to see someone like you willing to put in the work. Like I said, you’re going to be just fine. Continue your badassery.
My teachers keep telling me the same thing. I’m just here to work, I have no aspirations that this will make me rich and famous.
Loving it is what’s important. Because god knows there are plenty of people who hate their jobs. If you can find something that you love and make it work, more power to you, sir.
